SPIDER WEB CHART

Summary

This activity describes the need, general methods and SOCR utilities for the Spider Web Chart and simulation. The simulated data may then be easily copied and pasted in different SOCR Analyses or Graphing tools for further interrogation.

Goals

The aims of this activity is to:

  • Gain knowledge of the spider web chart by using SOCR Applet
  • Utilize the spider web chart in different situations
  • Show the importance and benefits of using Spider Web

Background

When displaying several different variables related to one item on a chart, the spider web or radar charts are often useful. These charts have multiple axes that allow different factors to be shown. In these types of charts, points closer to the center on any axes indicates low values and points further from the center indicate high values.

Description

Go to the SOCR Charts and select Miscellaneous from the items located on the left, then select Spider Web Chart Demo:

Note that in this demonstration, it allows five factors to be displayed on the chart with three different graphs. Below the graph is a set of numerical data.

Examples & Exercises

  • Exercise 1: The Spider Web Chart may be similar to a probability chart where is displays relationships between two or more different events. Create a probability chart of event A and event B, then create a Spider Web chart of the same data information. What are the similarities and what are the differences?

Data Type and Format

By clicking Data between the Graph and Mapping button, it allows users to input or vary the values of the data set. The Spider Web Chart allows users to input the values of two or more events. In the data table, the name of the events or series are listed under the first column. Then the data values are recorded in the corresponding row of the event. The image below demonstrates this:

Applications

One of the most persuasive elements when proposing data and literature to others is a well-designed chart presentation. Any one may use this application for comparing several values.

Suppose, investors want to see which stock is the best for investment. By creating a simple Spider Web Chart, the investors may easily graph more than one stock over a period of time having one common factor.
