INDEX CHARTS
Summary
This activity describes the need, general methods and SOCR utilities for the index chart. The simulated data may then be easily copied and pasted in different SOCR Analyses or Graphing tools for further interrogation.
Goals
The aims of this activity is to:
- better the understanding of index charts
- show how the index chart is applied to events
- explain the flexibility of SOCR index charts
Background
Mostly used in finance, Index Charts are similar to Line Charts. But instead of plotted every data value, there are no specific points on the chart. Only the line is visible with straight edges and no curves. The line is continuous and travels in one direction.

Description
Go to the SOCR Charts and select Line Charts from the items located on the left, then select the demonstration for Index Charts:
The image above is a demonstration of a simple Index Chart. Note that there are no data points on the graph but only the line of the graph. Note that the line is continuous and does not curve. Below the graph, statistical values of the data set are shown.
Examples & Exercises
- Exercise 1: Suppose you are given data information of one company in the stock market. Show how the index chart may be useful in displaying its growth over the past 5 years. What can be drawn from this illustration? What factors affect the growth or depression of the stock market?
- Exercise 2: While watching the news on television, how often are index charts used to display growth of businesses? Can it be used to display behaviors of other events such as height growth, population growth, etc.?
Data Type and Format
By clicking Data inbetween the Graph and Mapping button, it allows users to input or vary the values of the data set. There are two different types of variables - the independent variable and the dependent variable. Note that in the image below, the independent variables are simply listed as integers under the first column and the dependent variable are listed to the corresponding value under the second column:
Applications
One of the most persuasive elements when proposing data and literature to others is a well-designed chart presentation.
For businesses, using the Index Chart will visually show the growth of the company without displaying the specific growth of the business at a certain point in time.
